How can a mud run/obstacle course race strengthen your relationship?

Let me count the ways…

  1. It encourages team work between partners.
  2. You can compete/complete it with just the 2 of you or create a team with other couples.
  3. The race acts as a common goal both of you are striving to achieve and can bring you closer during your training leading up to the race.
  4. It gives you something to look forward to. So many times relationships can become stale and stifled and a challenging obstacle course race can shake things up because it REQUIRES teamwork.
  5. There is something super attractive about watching your partner work, sweat, and help you.

Last weekend, our friends Hilary and Roman joined Stephen and I for the Ultimate Challenge Night Ops race. It was a NIGHT TIME race through the deep, dark woods of central South Carolina.

Hilary and I go way back… Hilary started out as my client a few years ago, visited me for a photo shoot in 2013, and recently started her own blog and fitness information resource, Hilary’s Healthy Habits.

We made a whole fun weekend out of it! Hilary and Roman flew in from Philly on Friday and we enjoyed the beautiful city of Charleston on Friday, the beach on Saturday during the day, and then drove up to Columbia that evening for a 9:00pm race start.

Things to do in Charleston

We decided to stay the night in Columbia before making the 2 hour drive back to Charleston on Sunday. Hilary and Roman spent the rest of Sunday and Monday touring Charleston and then caught a 6:00am flight back to Philly.

You don’t need a ton of time to make a ton of memories. You just need to get a little creative!

Stephen and I are looking forward to our next obstacle course race (OCR). I am even incorporating more running into my training. Most of my additional running will be intervals and HIIT… my body can’t take mile after mile running plus HIIT is exponentially more effective than the mile after mile method.
